False Things
by Galerie Steph
Location: Galerie Steph
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 14 Mar - 26 Apr 2014

Galerie Steph is presents False Things, a group exhibition of four young Thai artists Lalit Wisutthisophon, Latthapon Korkiatarkul, Nuttapon Sawasdee and Pitchanan Sornyen. The four artists were recently selected for presentation in SPOT ART, a juried art festival for exceptional artists under 30 in Asia. False Things includes new works not previously on view. The 15 works presented vary across mediums, and include photographs, watercolours and found objects turned sculptural. Together, they boldly contemplate the mendacity of beliefs and materiality, appearances and facades, history and image-making, and societal norms and values.

In The Ash series, Lalit Wisutthisophon portrays with unflinching rawness the futility of existence and its eventual decay. Her photographic and video works portray the falsity of meanings and material objects we delude ourselves with. By inserting herself in her photographs, she invites us to not only observe but also place ourselves in the work amidst its despair and discontent.

Latthapon Korkiatarkul works with various found objects only to transform it. He rejects aspects of its observable appearances, choosing instead to tease out the conceptual possibilities hidden within the objects. These transmutations challenge and surprise the viewer by both accentuating and subverting our perception of the objects’ original form.

Nuttapon Sawasdee takes recognisable historical images as his point of departure. He isolates the main actors in these images and renders them into small watercolour figures measuring as small as one centimetre. In representing the figures small, indistinct and detached from the historical stage, Sawasdee prompts us to look upon it closely and re-examine the moments that made them renown.

Dresses and Desire, a series composed of women’s clothes draped over wooden frames, is Pitchanan Sornyen’s internal conflict with her sexuality made manifest. The articles of clothing, from nègligèe to shirts in various shades of black, are layered upon each other and sewn together, standing for secret desires and hidden behaviours.
