Gods of Metal
by Galerie Steph
Location: Galerie Steph
Artist(s): Prageeth MANOHANSA
Date: 9 Nov - 29 Dec 2012

Galerie Steph is pleased to present, together with Saskia Fernando Gallery of Colombo, the first Singapore solo exhibition of Sri Lankan sculptor Prageeth Manohansa. Entitled Gods of Metal, it opens on November 9 until December 29 2012. The show features Prageeth’s new work that will be exhibited to the general public for the first time at Galerie Steph.

Prageeth Manohansa is most celebrated for his unique and charming metal sculpture but this exhibition will include his charcoal works on paper. Prageeth’s life-sized sculptures are made primarily out of recycled scrap metal transformed into stunning sculptures. The transformation of cold forged metal into warm delightful animal sculptures while avoiding sentimentality is the particular genius of Prageeth. He has been working with scrap metal as his primary medium since he graduated with a Bachelor of Sculpture from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, in 2005. His technique of using found metal objects to create art has taken years of thought and planning, and the results are obvious to any viewer. While his works on paper in the exhibition are much more restrained, they are still captivating images that express dynamic sculptural movement and emotion.

Prageeth’s works have been exhibited in numerous galleries in Sri Lanka where he lives and works. He has had solo exhibitions at Assembled Art, in association with MIVET National Centre for the Arts & National Art Gallery Maldives, Maldives Institute of Vocational Training, Maldives in 2010, Amangalla Hotel, Galle, Sri Lanka in 2009 and Galle Art Trail, Galle Film Festival, Galle, Sri Lanka, in 2008. He has also exhibited at the Colombo Art Biennale, Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2009 and was part of Contemporary Art From Sri Lanka 2011, Asia House, London, UK.
