Richard Koh Fine Art Singapore is proud to present emerging Philippine artist, Ryan Villamael (b.1987) first solo exhibition in Singapore. The exhibition, which will feature 18 new works, will be on at our gallery from 16 Nov – 1 Dec 2012. This exhibition is in collaboration with Silverlens Gallery.
In this exhibition, Villamael plays around with the idea of creating simulated textures by obsessively cutting, slicing and breaking the flatness of paper. In this series of precision cuts he transforms sheets of paper into somewhat recognizable images of furry things: a wig, a braided knot, an overgrowth of figures covered with hair. This also refers to the artist's daily routine of failing to shave off his facial hair and observing its uncontrollable growth over a short period of time. This abstinence from the razor somehow resulted in the transference to create these pieces. Such technique applied from shaving resembles the process of cutting out paper; both demand precision and time.
