The Dream House is a constantly unfolding picture
by Richard Koh Fine Art Singapore
Location: Richard Koh Fine Art Singapore
Artist(s): Jay TICAR
Date: 27 Apr - 22 May 2012

'The Dream House is a constantly unfolding picture' is the 3rd set of developments that started at Bandung in 2008 through a plan for an exhibition about family.

In his paintings, Ticar articulates and forms imagery based on his dealings with conceptual constructs that begins with a definite subject. His tendency to seek possibilities is akin to abstraction but his elements involve both representational and pure forms. Each of these elements is free to portray varying significations ranging from expressive gestures, decoration or symbols. In 'The Dream House is a constantly unfolding picture', Ticar expresses his ideas pertaining to immigration in Canada, through the scope of his own family experiences.

Works from this current installment uses main elements from the previous exhibitions but features fresher sources of imagery and thought. The first exhibition is centered on playing with Filipino metaphors of relating family members as parts of the house, and respectively the house as a reflection of the socio economic situation at that time, highlighted by the 2008 financial crisis. Travel and transfer of Ticar?s family as a context is another recurring source that supported some visual elements in the works such as changing settings. Usage of images with an architectural feel is an expression of a design tendency for pastiche and extensions, which Ticar believe is culturally innate among Filipinos.

Works from his second exhibition, 'Oras Pang Pamilya (Family Time)' at Langgeng Gallery in Jakarta in 2010, drew thoughts about the future. Ideas of travel and transfer through changing settings is more evident but of a different flavor than the first exhibition. Involving images of sci-fi scenarios (apocalyptic, post apocalyptic and new world) provided a stronger expression through ambient qualities.
