Pretty Grotesque
by Vue Privée
Location: Vue Privée
Artist(s): Mojoko
Date: 10 Mar - 22 May 2011

Vue Privée is proud to present Mojoko’s first solo exhibition titled “Pretyy Grotesque”, which will be held from 10th March till 18th April at our centrally located VP space.

Vue Privée is a new art concept space and brand focused on limited edition artworks, merchandise, events and a lifestyle that is inspired by photography. VP is a culmination of Olivier Henry’s (VP founder and renowned photographer) passions, fusing his love for, and knowledge of photography with art, building a platform to share this with the world around him.  VP is a constantly evolving space devoted to a lifestyle steeped in an artistic spirit that is relevant, meaningful and beautiful.  VP is part gallery, part art shop, part refuge for like-minded artists.

In this circus of peculiarities, Mojoko explores the boundaries of the beautiful and the grotesque.  In his first solo show we discover the fine line between the grotesque, the strange and the fantastic. With priveleged access to the VP archives, he has unearthed some bizarre documents and photography and remixed them to become the basis for this show.

Mojoko's intense graphic style is a reaction to today’s bombardment of images in global mass media. His upbringing in Hong Kong has influenced his work being surrounded by Eastern and Western advertising from an early age. Currently Creative Director of Kult magazine, he is part curator, part designer but 100% strange.

About the Artist:

Mojoko, aka Steve Lawler - Born in Iran, growing up in Hong Kong and now based in Singapore, Steve graduated in Graphic Design after which he pursued a 2-year scholarship at Fabrica in the new media department working on Colors Magazine.  His professional experience extends to several renowned international labels, namely Diesel, where he joined the in-house creative team, and OgilvyOne, creating new websites and campaigns for many global brands under the group.  He now acts as creative consultant at Kult, an unconventional boutique agency in Singapore.

When he’s not guest-designing magazines, conducting art workshops or silk screening, he spends his time going around and picking up obscure pieces of paper from the ground.  "One man’s junk is another man’s painting".
