Give Art Space is proud to present Serial Instinct, which features a new series of paintings, Dwelling, by the critically-acclaimed artist Michael Lee, as well as recent works on paper by Royal College of Art Research Fellow, Richard Caldicott.
Dwelling depicts the floorplans of structures: structures only dreamed of, structures with uncertain futures, and structures destroyed or demolished. In reducing them to pure linework, from a fixed aerial perspective, at a single scale of 1:50, Lee evokes the roles of reduction, bias, and imagination in the process of memory.
In a series produced from 2011-12, Caldicott's work is strikingly restrained, and reflects his long-running interest in Modernist architecture and Minimalist music. As part of an over-arching, decades-long exploration of line, colour, and form, Caldicott presents a sensory experience that is simultaneously austere and seductive.
