In his first solo exhibition in Singapore, Picture This, Hoang Duong Cam presents two recent series of works, Self-portrait As SomeOne, and Pinhole 1972.
Consisting of photographic collages in which Hoang merges images of his face with those of historical figures, Self-portrait As SomeOne provokes the possibility of combining intimately personal points of view with broader perspectives. The historical figures selected include Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and Dang Thai Son, individuals who had a profound influence on the course of Vietnamese culture and society.
Pinhole 1972 invites us to consider the process by which nostalgia and deprivation provide fertile ground for fantasy, merging such diverse sources as childhood tales of chewing gum, and a photo-journalistic survey of Hanoi in 1972, to produce delicate and intriguing images which straddle the fine line between abstract and representational painting.
