Celebrated Filipino abstractionist Edwin Wilwayco returns for his second solo exhibition in Singapore at Momentous Arts with twelve large oil on canvas.

Throughout the more than three decades of sustained dedication to abstract painting which include acclaimed series Blues (2003), Moving Mountains (2005), Silent Music (2006), & Scherzo (2007) which has taken him to the cities of New York, Paris, Essen, Berlin & Belgium; the prolific artist will be in Singapore for his highly anticipated solo show entitled ‘Recalibration‘

The series of works were created over a period of nine months in his two studios in Rhode Island and Manila, incorporating improvisation in both techniques/processes that created new meanings and in dialogue with the mystifiying forces of nature. Wilwayco signature oeuvre is informed by deep spirituality, self-introspection and a reverence for the beauty and power of nature. The process of painting, an integral part of his artistic practice unfurls what the abstract master has come to be known for : lyrical & eloquent brushworks.

The lush paintings of Wilwayco with their immediacy and accessibility in particular the artist’s construction process- painterly marks, deep passages, overpainting animated with playful elements of drips and dribbles with the occasional adding of sand and sack cloth; keeps the viewer fixated on a surface adventure and affirms the artist passionate devotion to Abstract Expressionism. Their emotive power articulated across many levels from the tranquil to the exuberant and vigorous; expressively nuanced by colours and gestures. It is this that lends Wilwayco flowing paintings their intense vibrancy and energy.

About the artist:

Edwin Wilwayco was born in Guimba, Philippines in 1952. He is a 1982 British Council Scholar for painting at the West Surrey College of Arts & Design, Surrey England and a Thirteen Artists awardee of Sentrong Pangkultura ng Piiipinas (Cultural Centre of the Philippines)

He currently lives and works In the US and Philippines. He has had solo exhibitions at Philippine Centre NY (2006), Lopez Museum Gallery (1998), Ayala Museum Gallery IV & III (1992, 1989). He has also shown his works in group shows in Cultural Centre of Philippines Main gallery (2003), Metropolitian Museum of Manila (1999, 1993).
