Associated with the Subic Bay Institute is Konn Salao, an interior design graduate of the University of Santo Tomas but who is developing into an artist in the institute. She is, in fact, a product of the school. She has done many paintings, most of them on woman. Her works are based on the circular forms that make up woman’s bodies, although her subject matter is woman, she herself is not necessarity feminist nor does she espouse feminist causes, like the protection of woman and children against violence and abuse, and thus there is a certain lack of edge and tension. Woman in her painting seem to be cocooned in a dream world of pinks and blues, and she is only part of a traditional concept of gender which is bound to nature and unquestioned. Nevertheless, at her best she shows a good sense of design, which will carry her through as an artist.
