The art world's new destination
by Bartha & Senarclens | Partners
Location: Marina Bay Sands
Date: 12 Jan - 16 Jan 2011

Bartha & Senarclens is participating in Art Stage Singapore. The art fair will run from 12 to 16 January 2011 at the recently opened Marina Bay Sands. Lorenzo Rudolf, the Former Director of Art Basel, Inventor Art Basel Miami and co-creator of ShContemporary, is launching Art Stage Singapore, an international event that will open the annual art season in Singapore. For its debut the fair will include a selection of leading galleries and interesting, young galleries from Asia Pacific and abroad creating a unique opportunity for the Asia Pacific art
market.

The fair is supported by various Singapore state agencies driving the development of the arts including the Singapore Economic Development Board, Singapore Tourism Board, National Heritage Board and the National Arts Council. “We are thrilled to be part of such a prominent cultural event that echoes our ambition to bring international art to Singapore. This fair strengthens Singaporeʼs foothold as the dominant cultural centre in South East Asia” – Frédéric de Senarclens.

Bartha & Senarclens is showcasing paintings, drawings and sculptures by internationally acclaimed and emerging artists. The show features artworks by modern and contemporary artists:

Armen Agop - Egypt
Rina Banerjee - India
Tom Carr - Spain
Yves Dana - Switzerland
Barry Flanagan - United Kingdom
Damien Hirst - United Kingdom
Joan Miró - Spain
Adriana Molder - Portugal
Marc Quinn - United Kingdom
Doug & Mike Starn - United States of America
Thukral & Tagra - India
Victor Vasarely - Hungary
Bernar Venet - France
Tom Wesselmann - United States of America
Beat Zoderer - Switzerland

For its exhibition the gallery is unveiling an important acrylic on cardboard work by Victor Vasarely, widely regarded as the father of Op Art, a movement from the 1960ʼs focusing on optical illusion in art. The 1968 painting is an early example of the artistʼs mastery in transforming a flat surface into a threedimensional space. Vasarelyʼs kinetic visual experiments and innovations in colour and form have shaped his legacy as a major master of 20th century art.

Bernar Venet is a focal point of the show with an important painting from 1976, a turning point in Venetʼs artistic exploration before using his recurrent theme of undetermined lines. The iconic ARC sculptures in corten steel offer an interesting contrast to the stone and bronze totemic pieces by Swiss artist Yves Dana.

An explosion of colour characterizes the exhibition with works by Damien Hirst, Marc Quinn, Thukral and Tagra and Tom Wesselmann. An oil on canvas by British artist Marc Quinn will be shown. The impressive flower painting reflects on the unnatural manner in which human desires can reshape natureʼs limitations while simultaneously celebrating its irresistible beauty.

Another highlight of the exhibition is New York based contemporary Indian artist Rina Banerjee. Banerjeeʼs mixed media work demonstrates an acute preoccupation with the role of culture, mythology and fairy tales. The artistʼs intricate drawings depict demons and gods studded with spiritual imagery. The sumptuous textures and intense colours offer the lure and terror of the exotic, commenting on the artistʼs own multi-cultural background.

The selection of artists presented validates Bartha & Senarclens access to exceptional artists from Europe, America and India. The distinctive artworks and calibre of artists signifies the galleryʼs eye for quality and passion for fine art. “Singaporeʼs market stands out amongst its regional peers because collectors here are receptive to art beyond their own culture. Art Stage Singapore demonstrates the appetite of residents for international fine art and marks a seminal moment for the industry”, Frédéric de Senarclens.
