Tom Carr Rolls Out "A Red Carpet for Orchard Road"
by Bartha & Senarclens | Partners
Location: Orchard Road
Artist(s): Tom CARR
Date: 17 Sep - 26 Sep 2010

Bartha & Senarclens Partners is pleased to announce Tom Carr has been selected by Digital Nights 2010 for their new media and digital art festival taking place from 17th – 26th September 2010.

An adaptation of Nuit Blanche, a flagship night event in major cities across Europe, this is a spectacular event showcasing new media artworks by nine international artists. Supported by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA) and Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA), DNS 2010 will showcase artworks along Orchard Road and at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM). The digital artworks will be displayed simultaneously for ten days allowing locals and tourists to enjoy works by internationally acclaimed European artists during Singaporeʼs annual Grand Prix season.

Featured works include a suspended aerial light sculpture, a non-conventional window mapping video installation and glamorous red carpet along Orchard road. Additionally interactive visual displays and indoor and outdoor light installations will be on display at SAM.

Tom Carrʼs artwork, A Red Carpet For Orchard Road will be located at the public walkway in front of Ngee Ann City. The interactive digital artwork projects a red carpet onto street level inviting everyone to participate, become a VIP and enjoy the red carpet experience. The primarily red design projections will appear and disappear; reappearing seconds later in another form, continuously changing and evolving. Pedestrians can interact with this artwork, playing with shadows and lights. The reflection of the projections on their bodies allows them to become part of a dynamic and constantly evolving installation. This unique experience actively engages the audience to think of the concepts of beauty and the ephemeral.

A Red Carpet for Orchard Road marks Tom Carrʼs public art debut in Singapore and Asia. Born in 1956 in Tarragona, Spain the artist lives and works in Sant Quirze del Vallès. He is a professor at the Escola Massana, Barcelona. Having exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States Tom Carr has primarily produced urban art and large-scale sculptures since 1990, namely in France, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Cuba, Austria and California. His sculpture Agulla graces the Mirò Fondationʼs garden in Barcelona and Seed & Helix is the landmark of Société Générale Bankʼs headquarters in La Défense, Paris. Tom Carrʼs light projections have also been shown at museums such as the Musée dʼArt Moderne de Céret in France, the Science Museum in Barcelona, Spain and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain.

This light installation by Tom Carr is Bartha & Senarclens first public art project in Singapore. “We are very excited to introduce a work of art by Tom Carr to the Singapore public. Public accessibility of new media and digital art in Singapore has increased tremendously in recent years, a demonstration of the governmentʼs recognition of the long-term implications of enhanced urban living through exposure to art and culture” – Frédéric de Senarclens, Partner, Bartha & Senarclens. Tom Carr is exclusively represented by Bartha & Senarclens in Singapore.
