‘Breathe – Works by ZUL’, presented in conjunction with the mall-wide Sakura Festival (12 - 21 March), is the first sound art exhibition at the ION Art gallery. An unconventional art exhibition of the ‘invisible realm’ – sound – the display consists of some 30 sound orbs suspended throughout the gallery - each emitting acoustic compositions by ZUL. Inspired by a dynamic mix of Zen sensibilities and Japanese city ambient sounds, these ‘sound sculptures’ are adapted from ZUL’s Japan sound-art series that emerged from ZUL’s work for the Ogaki Biennale in 2006. A series of ZUL’s design drawings will also be on display.
One of Singapore’s notable multi-disciplinary contemporary artists, Zulkifle Mahmod is co-founder of the sound-art collective Pink Ark, that organised the first 24-hour sound art festival in Singapore. He was the first local artist to present a sound art sculpture at the Singapore Pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 2007. A sculptor by training, Zul designed the Singapore Formula One Trophy, is an Associated Artist of The Substation and has been involved in several leading art and cultural initiatives.
