3 Solos
by ION Art Gallery
Location: Ion Art Gallery
Artist(s): ANDRE Tan, Randy SOLON, VINC
Date: 28 Apr - 9 May 2012

Andre Tan’s 5th solo show continues with his anachronistic and unlikely juxtapositions of historical Chinese figures with coveted items of Western luxury. Drawing this time on iconic imagery beloved of China’s political pop movement, the series draws attention not only to the dissolution of communism into commercialism, but also to the absurdities of conspicuous consumption.

Andre Tan obtained his Diploma in Fine Arts (Painting) from the LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore (2000), his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art with 1st Class Honors from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (2004) and returned to LASALLE for his Master of Arts in Fine Arts (2006). Andre is the recipient of the Judge’s Choice for UTGP08-Kenichiro Mogi Prize (2008, Japan), Studentship Scheme (2005) in LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, and also the Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship (1999). His artworks are collected by private collectors in Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and the UK, and he has been auctioned in Singapore and Hong Kong.

RANDY SOLON Bless the Beasts and the Children

Bless the Beasts and the Children acts as a cautionary tale for its audience. Conditioned by Mother Goose and the Brothers Grimm, we tend to believe only in happily ever afters. As curious youth, the beauty that we see, we want to own and take pleasure in. But as we thread our way through the hidden traps and impending dangers of life, we discover that there is a price to pay for what we took for free. The menagerie assembled in Filipino artist Randy Solon’s 6th solo show range from cute and cuddly to wild and feral. He reminds us that in life, the law of the jungle is in operation, and it will take its toll once youth and joy have passed.

Randy 'Andoi' Solon holds two degrees in the visual arts: a Bachelor of Fine Arts, major in Painting, at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, and a Certificate in Advertising from the Philippines Women's University in Manila. Solon is the recipient of numerous awards from national art competitions. He was the Grand Prize winner in the 2006-2007 PLDT-PDC Telephone Directory Cover 20th Visual Art National Competition and was a three time Finalist in the 38th, 39th and 40th Shell National Student Painting Competition in 2005, 2006 and 2007. His works have featured in major auctions on SE Asian Art at both Sotheby’s and Christie’s.

VINC Paintings

Spanish, English, German, French, it doesn't matter what language, in terms of art this almost genetic connection is recognized, Vinc is the son of Warhol. In the same, spirit his family includes Allen Jones and Lichtenstein amongst others.

Vinc's works introduce us to the US, from gasoline engines to sunshine, and of course the success story.

As the years go by, new desires lead him to broaden his horizons and travel the world.

His subjects become more complex, progress from contemplation to storytelling with his "Puzzles".

From Gstaad to Formentera, from Paris to London, from Singapore to Los Angeles, Vinc the chic gypsy-artist, full of inexhaustible passion, shares with us his journeys and his "Joie de Vivre" through his art.

No matter where, Vinc's art, in all its forms, diffuses the same energy, so pure, so powerful  that it could make a lame man want to  jump up and dance to some Rock n' Roll!
