Three Artists, Two Countries
by Dahlia Gallery
Location: Dahlia Gallery
Artist(s): Paul Albert TANCHIO, CHOW Sum Woon, NG Siok Hoon
Date: 15 Jul - 25 Jul 2010

“Three Artists, Two Countries” brings together three Singapore born artists who have an affinity with Australia; Paul is a Sydney-based artist, Sum works and resides in Australia and Siok Hoon is a graduate of Fine Arts in Sydney. The exhibition creates a platform for an open dialogue between these three artists conceptually or technically, to develop a link in our practice despite working from two different countries. The exhibition intended also to bring forth creative exploration and collaboration between the artists.

The exhibition will be shown in Dahlia Gallery, which is situated in the midst of Chinatown. The physical site revealed itself as a strong representation of home, a place of origin. It allows the viewers to understand how our experiences overseas challenged the way we perceived our homeland. The works will unravel itself in harmony or in contradiction to the place where we are familiar or were once familiar with.

About the Artists:

Paul Albert TANCHIO (Singaporean)
A graduate of Fine Art and Theoretical Enquiry at Sydney College of the Arts, the University of Sydney, Paul Tanchio is a Singapore/Sydney-based artist who has specialised in nondual visual artworks. He investigates the intersection between culture and phenomenology in the human experience. He moves between 2D, 3D and video, including installation. His work has been exhibited in San Francisco, Singapore and Sydney. Some are in the collections of the United Overseas Bank and homes of private collectors.

Chow Sum Woon (Born Singapore, Australian)
Looking at Adelaide based, Singapore born artist Chow Sum Woon’s paintings one senses an organic and chaotic temperament in execution and presentation. However, first impression can be deceptive, for Chow’s work is defined by the sensibility of an artist who has also experienced the rigours of a draftsman’s life. This duality also extends to issues of culture and identity, resulting in works that are quite autobiographical, evoking the discipline of oriental brush handling fused with an abstraction strategy that is informed by western convention. They are imbued with a quality that is quite personal and spiritual in nature. Furthermore, Chow’s work mirrors the inherent tension between harmony and chaos, for it is in attending to their resolution that balance can be found.

Chow Sum Woon holds an Honours Degree in Visual Arts from the University of South Australia. He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Australia and Singapore.

Ng Siok Hoon (Singaporean)
Siok Hoon received her Bachelor of Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney, Australia in 2000. She has actively participated in many exhibitions. The recent exhibitions include ‘Remade, Relived; Modern Art in Singapore’ and the ‘Palimpsest Exhibition’ in 2009.
