Su Huaying is a nomad artist from the Dawur ethnic group who live in the Hulunbeir Grassland in Inner Mongolia.
These paintings are filled by the inner longing for the wild and open nature of his childhood landscape whereas now his physical being is caught in the urban environment. He wanders through the city viewing the streets as if they were passing-by scenery seen from a speedy train window. He paints small clay houses disappearing in the immense yellow earth under the surrealistically blue sky. Sometimes the decayed small houses appear half-submerged in a sandstorm, contrasting with the impossibly crystal-blue sky. Sometimes the houses are frozen in a winter landscape. The piercingly chilly air from the Gobi desert disturbs the tranquil surface of the painting. The feeling of sadness is almost tangible.
A descendant of the proud Mongolian Khan, Su offers us a moment of tranquility and meditation in front of his canvases. Landscape Without Wolf is a metaphor for both his memories from the past and his imagination about the future.
