Looking closely to the theme of 2011’s indigNation festival, Pride, Camouflage is a complete opposite of what is meant to be proud. In this exhibition, we are looking at the idea of how this ‘pride’ is applied in contemporary Singapore.

The development of LGBT community locally has been tremendous and public’s perception towards sensitive issues has grown for the better. But how much have we declared our ‘pride’ as part of the minority? How have we flagged the rainbow signatures in public spaces. Ironic as it is, yes, we have not.

This exhibition aims to highlight the idea of camouflaging into the community, not necessarily a bad thing, which the local LGBT community, at large still succumbs in. By integrating into the mainstream community, without any discrimination on sexual identity, does that make us proud?

By not addressing the issues of sexual liberation and living the common life, yet accepting one’s identity being gay, is that the pride that we are talking about? Yes, when there’s pride, there’s hiding, there’s camouflaging.

Camouflage will feature young artists exploring the issue of integrated pride through the various medium of presentation. Works exhibited will show balanced statements and views upon the challenge of gay pride in comparison to social integration. Can we still camouflaging yet proud of being gay? Does one have to be the opposite of another?
