Spaces in Between
by Artesan Gallery + Studio
Location: Artesan Gallery + Studio
Artist(s): Yasmin SISON
Date: 10 Jun - 26 Jun 2010

In this exhibition, Yasmin Sison paints the secret life of interiors, the seemingly ordinary spaces from where, walled from the clamors of the social (dis)order, we are able to take off our masks, settle into our perceptions of comfort and reveal ourselves - to ourselves.

As a continuation of a thematic series that she had started in the 90’s, her works in Spaces in Between returns to the interiors of structures, of both buildings and of figures that have been cut out or painted over. For the artist, the purpose of the works is to highlight the sense of uncertainty between the elements of accurately depicted images of the background, in contrast to the intuitive strokes of the figure. “I wanted to highlight the sense of uncertainty in the works. A certain push and pull of elements … the measured grid for grid painting of the background in contrast to the intuitive strokes of the figure,” states Yasmin Sison for her first solo exhibition in Singapore.
