A Maelstrom is a very powerful whirlpool or large swirling body of water. Such a force reflects the complex relationship the Philippines has with the elements. As a historically sea faring nation, the archipelago of islands annually enjoys idyllic tropical weather as well as the wrath of devastating typhoons. Philippines has always been its people, fiercely proud of their culture and country. Artists as invested national stakeholders, often document, question and celebrate the grand narratives of human experience. Reflecting both personal and public narratives within Philippine culture, MAELSTROM embraces the expansive nature of Gallery 3 in VWFA Singapore to provoke emotions and pathos as well as showcasing the technical skills of each artist through large-scale works. These visual stories present diverse approaches that incorporate the poetic, comic, tragic and spiritual aspects of Filipino culture as well as triggering visual awe in the monumental.
