Silence (Household Series) /8 (2008) by LIU Jia
57 x 185 x 64cm
Polyester fibre

‘Fables of the Society’ is perhaps the most appropriate underlying message behind all of Liu Jia’s installations, where he is constantly challenging the public to look at social and cultural issues from a subversive and taunting perspective. Household Series exhibited his extreme look at the delicate relationship between humans and animals to the evanescence of modern social issues which opened up a new dimension in observing contemporary life from a critical yet whimsical manner. Here, one witnesses the non-segregation of humans and animals, with what appears to be a fusion of daunting alien figurines. In shrunk sizes with a strong juxtapose to the other accompanying subjects – sofa, bathtub, tables etc – Household Series provided two facets of looking at the artists’ works: one as looking to question reality, that humans and animals are after all alike in nature; and the other, as looking to explore the ambiguity of perception and representation, that suppression from our daily lives that were brought upon to both ourselves and the environment. Interestingly, the application of humans and animals appear to be his main narratives in all his works, which explains Liu Jia’s love for animals since his childhood days, as well his quest for the real meaning behind society’s bias hierarchy between man and animals.

A humble and creative young sculptor, Liu Jia has been enjoying great success with his artworks, which have been highly acquired by museums, private collectors and most recently, hammered at international auctions.
