Problems of content and representation play an important role in Dodit’s paintings. Rice has long been an important subject matter for Dodit. Sometimes he even creates works directly using rice sheaves. Dodit does not only talk about the agrarian culture or the culture of rice, but also about rice as an inseparable part of the social-political situation in Indonesia. Everything that is related to rice gives rise to innumerable challenges, which end up having direct impact to most people. For example the issue of fertilizers, land, peasants’ welfare, famine, hunger, etc. In short, for Dodit, rice constitutes a “grand” matter, and his canvasses are full of sacks of rice. It seems that Dodit wants to talk about the abundance of rice. The way he presents it, however, using the pattern of optical pixels makes the rice sacks seem to exist as a visual fiction. The optical style enchants the audience, traps them into the rhythm of the optical construct of the rice sacks. This visually strong optical construct can be seen as the metaphor for the problem of rice: right in front of our eyes, but it is difficult to guess what the underlying problem has been.
