John van der Sterren, acclaimed Dutch-New Zealand Fauvist painter, will display his works in his third, Singapore solo exhibition titled Van Der Sterren at Chan Hampe Galleries @ Raffles Hotel. Exhibited will be paintings inspired by South East Asia, specifically Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.
Van der Sterren's South East Asian works have been inspired by the lush landscapes and timeless architecture of the cities in which he immersed himself. Through the artist's extensive travels and his pleasure in new discoveries, foreign landscapes and unfamiliar places, Van der Sterren brings us robust and highly colourful paintings, capturing the beauty of each city and its surroundings.
Through this exhibition, Van der Sterren showcases his ability to depict his subjects, using vivid interpretations in his own unique style whilst retaining the timeless nature of the landscape. Ultimately creating works that express his true feelings as well as his love for aging architecture and scenes of vanishing histories.
About the Artist
John van der Sterren was born in 1938 in Java, Indonesia. Of Dutch decent, Van der Sterren spent his early years on a tea estate in west Java where his father was the manager. At 13 years of age his family immigrated to New Zealand to start a new life after the Second World War. It was here that Van der Sterren finished his studies and met well-known New Zealand painter, Cedric Savage who introduced him to oil painting. For over 20 years Van der Sterren kept a professional footing in the advertising industry, painting and featuring in exhibitions in his free time. Following the artist's first solo exhibition in Indonesia in 1993, John left the communications industry and turned his attentions exclusively to painting, becoming one of the leading landscape and portrait painters in Indonesia.
Over the past 18 years Van der Sterren has travelled at length around South East Asia, Europe, New Zealand and Australia constantly painting and sketching his surrounds. He has exhibited in solo exhibitions across Indonesia as well as France and Morocco and his paintings have been extensively commissioned in South-East Asia, and beyond. His work is keenly sought after by collectors both in Indonesia and overseas and is represented in many private and museum collections around the world.
