Reaching for Meaning
by Y2Arts
Location: Y2ARTS
Artist(s): LI Man Jin
Date: 12 Jun - 27 Jun 2010

Y2ARTS is pleased to announce the opening on June 12 of an exhibition of female Abstract Expressionist, Li Manjin. This exhibition will be Li’s first solo exhibition at Y2ARTS, situated in MICA Building, in Singapore.

Presenting viewers with a selection of 8 acrylic and mixed medium on canvas works that show us both, the figure in states of quiet observation, as well as struggles, Li Manjin portrays the contradictions posed by common existential realities. In casting aspects of her private life onto the public stage in the form of timeless moral dilemmas, Li has reinstated the importance of subjects, and taken back the role of originator and skilled narrator of our struggle to find meaning in life.

Devoting to the exploration of the human condition to narrate real deepness and sense of the human experience, in Li’s paintings, subjects of bird is the surrogate of human. With influences drawn from Albert Giacometti, Cezanne and literati painter Huang Binhong, Li employs her distinctive draftsmanship and painterly breadth onto canvases, release a rich expressive force and blooming elegance.

This observance reveals life as a series of changes, brought on at times, by personal choices and at other times, external ones but always compounded with the force these changes have on one’s daily life and perspective. This necessarily human condition creates unforeseeable turbulence in the inner and outer lives of Li’s figures.

The inherent psychology of this kind of struggle is all in the paint and portrayal of the figures and the spaces they occupy, a portrayal that reveals just how fragile our situations really are. Deftly expressed in Li’s sympathetic and agile hands, these situations translate into poetries.
