The New Year marks Fabrik Gallery’s most ambitious and important Group Exhibition to date. Curator Mark Saunderson has selected works by four of China’s most popular and interesting contemporary artists.
Yu Nancheng’s stunning oil paintings are very popular with collectors in Hong Kong and worldwide. The renowned Shanghai-based artist – known as “Mr Fish” – uses traditional “China Red” oil paint, layered with his palette knife in a unique way to create work which are somehow both traditional and modern.
Li Yueling paints his vibrant yet pure and sensitive images of children from his studio in Beijing. As he says, “children are the beginning of life, and also our past, present and future.”
Dong Jian is one of China’s most popular realist artists. His “Lost Landscapes” series features black and white subjects covered by colourful stripes. When not painting and exhibiting in China and abroad, Dong Jian teaches art at the Xian University of Technology and the Xian Academy of Fine Arts.
Zhang Wei is from the remote Gansu Province, where he witnessed many orphans and children living in harsh circumstances. The beautifully painted works in his “Glow” series are intended to encourage people to care for these children.
