Fabrik is pleased to present a joint exhibition by Beverly Fung and Daniel Lau, two young emerging artists from the Fabrik8 group.
The exhibition entitled All in our heads pertains to the fictional and narrative scenes the artists have developed along the years since art school - Beverly Fung's obese looking character set against a soft pale setting juxtaposed to Daniel Lau's skeletal mythological creatures.
Despite her modern approach on canvas, Beverly Fung's work is influenced by traditional Chinese paintings where landscapes and oddly placed objects suggest a previously rendered technique on paper to show the details using ink. The stories, which may appear to be light hearted and innocent, suggest an underlying darker tone. This is evident in one of her paintings where her signature character sits on a landscape surrounded by fictitious trees and playfully picks up one of the animals (sheep) as if to devour it - is in question. Her works seek to understand human psyche, its nature and behavioral impulses faced by the condition of survival.
Daniel Lau's work on the other hand is inspired by Chinese mythological stories by using important sources to understand visual and biological forms of his subject. He turns to the images originating from chronicles and early Chinese works of narrative history to scientific knowledge of biological systems of existing animals we have today. Although these creatures are fictional, through constructing biological features, they are attributed life. Transparency and layering artistic techniques are used to reinforce the internal and external formation of the creatures. Their existence is a paradox of fantasy and reality. Placed in silence, inanimate imaginary objects, yet possessing an aura of motion and energy.
