Contemporary Asian art has experienced a renaissance in the last decade, with the emergence of Chinese and Korean art as major forces in the art world. The conservatism that marked Asian societies has been called into question as Contemporary Asian Art moves into the 21st century and becomes increasingly global.
In this exhibition, artists from developed countries such as Singapore and South Korea are juxtaposed with their counterparts from rapidly developing economies of China and Indonesia. Emerging tools of cultural discourse has resulted in wildly convergent ideas filtering into the themes of the works in this exhibition.
Contemporary Asian Art commonly explores the intrigue of the human body, whether in a scatological or metaphysical form of representation. The nude has always been an important genre for artists, and at some point in their careers, confront the complexities and beauty surrounding of the nude form.
This exhibition focuses on a select group of young Asian artists working primarily on canvas, photography and sculpture, expressing the nude in the best of their artistic and intellectual concerns.
