Zhang Peng’s “Made in China” series continues with the scar features of the “Youth Trauma” series. The difference is that the artist is no longer infatuated with and pays heed to personal growth and wounds. Divested of colors, his work hides the color red (blood) behind the canvas and assumes a neater sense of simplicity. The same fairytale girl is put in the socialized virtual space, along with the artist’s questioning: as the society becomes more material-oriented, rifer with violence and extremes, is the trajectory of human evolution progressive or regressive? Flinging the viewer’s visual experience into confusion, the artist grafts the traces of history onto a bizarre plot, and uses the image of the naïve and unworldly girl to highlight the crooked and problem-ridden society. “Made in China” continues with the powerful analysis and rhetorical questioning of Zhang Peng’s artistic expression. Using the products of the society, the artist questions the nature of the society, and stimulates the mind of the public with his sharp and poignant visual expressions. In addition, he questions China’s future as well as that of the world.
