After a three-year hiatus, award-winning local contemporary oil painter and sculptor David Chan is pleased to present his anticipated fifth solo exhibition in Singapore intriguingly-titled ‘Every trick only needs one truth’.
Known for his immaculate painting style and the use of animals as metaphors in his artworks, David hopes to implore the viewers to ponder the fundamental shortcomings of human perception and how our volatile and evolving judging criteria ultimately mars and forms so-called ‘truths’. With this latest ensemble of artworks which includes paintings and intricate sculptures, David opens up a commentary about the relationship between ‘tricks’ and ‘truths’.
Not just mere aesthetically-pleasing visual treats, each work is a means to rekindle the innate sense of curiosity in everyone to probe further and recognise that sometimes, there is more than meets the eye. Through the clever use of layers and depth, David lures viewers to come closer and scrutinise each art piece. Each work alludes to a ‘ruse’ and viewers have to unravel the ‘trick’ and dissect the ‘truth’ they have been manipulated to see and believe.
Showcasing his mastery of classical fine painting and sculpting techniques matched with a thoughtful palette of juxtaposing warm and cold colours, each art piece highlights David’s uncanny talent for conveying depth through creating layers and textures.
Elaborates David, “We still find ourselves making assumptions based on superficial information. It appears that we are a species of foolhardy life forms that love to play trickster and victim at the same time.”
