Bill Thompson Solo Exhibition

Artist(s): Bill THOMPSON
Date: 15 Sep - 15 Oct 2011

The term 'function' doesn't usually surface in conversations about fine art - It's more likely to show up in a discussion about craft. Function implies something utilitarian: a tool, a piece of furniture, an object that serves a daily purpose. Those of us who produce paintings and sculpture don't generally believe that our work should be burdened with the restraints of utility. As a sculptor, I naturally embrace my creative freedom but also find it difficult to completely reject this Issue of functionality. In fact I'm quite attracted to it.

A chair's function is to provide a comfortable alternative to standing. On the other hand, a sculpture's purpose is nebulous and for many, may not offer anything of value. A room without a chair is probably less acceptable to the average person than a room without artwork. While a piece of my sculpture might not be able to compete with the usefulness of a chair, It may enhance the experience of being in that particular room. This possibility, the chance to affect and alter an environment Is what drives my approach; and the degree to which an individual piece accomplishes this goal Is how I judge its success. Although I don't consider myself to be a craftsman in the traditional sense, I do accept the responsibility and challenge of creating an object that functions. If it doesn't elicit an emotional response or excite the eye, then its of no use.
