Garden of Uncertainty
by Gallery 2
Location: Gallery 2
Artist(s): Dongi LEE
Date: 30 Aug - 30 Sep 2012

Gallery 2 is pleased to announce Dongi Lee's new exhibition 'Garden of Uncertainty'. Dongi Lee has led 'K-pop' trend in Korean Art, and well-known with his artwork 'Atomaus'. 13 paintings which have been painted since 2007 will be exhibited and this exhibition will focus on showing his extensive spectrum of artworks.

Until now, he has tried to use mixed-media and various expressions on Acrylic painting. The character 'Atomaus' is 'integrated' 'Atom' into 'Mickey Mouse', which are famous animation characters. When it was made in 1993, he intended not to give fixed identity to character. He also applied the same idea for a way of this exhibition. Like a new large-sized artwork 'Atomaus eating noodles' or 'Flower garden', pleasant and familiar artworks and other works with dark themes will be showed together. Also, in a turn of expression, he used animation images, SF images, and even abstract expressions. In 2008, he has tried to combinate different genres in a scene through 'Double Vision' series.

His works consist of 'referring' existing images, rather than creating new one. 'I-Box' is from conceptual art by Robert Morris, 'A handling a head of A' referred to Caravaggio's paintings, and he has reinterpreted a portrait of Freud or old religious issues. Also, recently, he is interested in 'K-pop' and used it as a subject. ('K-pop' means a phenomenon of pop art since late 1990's in Korean art) Superjunior, the famous boy band in Korea, has been as a model in his work, and 'a women with cell phone' was inspired by Korean drama. Lee thinks that main characters in drama are also a virtual image like characters in animation, and modern people identify themselves with those images.

In this exhibition, all-round world of his artworks and his view of art will be presented. As he cites the concept of 'garden' in Asia, he says that this exhibition will be a point covering both my world and the outside world, where is neither mine nor someone else's.
