Thierry Feuz Solo Exhibition
by Johyun Gallery
Location: Johyun Gallery
Artist(s): Thierry FEUZ
Date: 19 May - 3 Jul 2011

Johyun Gallery Seoul is pleased to present the solo exhibition of Thierry Feuz.

Using rich colors and science fiction-like imaginations, Feuz captures images of nature oscillating between abstraction and figuration onto a canvas. The artist does not specify whether his subjects filled with light are flowers blooming like a flare, a world of microorganisms observed through a microscope, or a look of a galaxy filled with nameless stars. Despite the lack of direct narration, his works give psychedelic visual stimulation through a feast of radiant colors as if we were experiencing an unknown world imperceptible to our naked eyes.

The free and dynamic patterns and colors of Feuz derive from the artist’s work process of scattering paint across a canvas rather than painting with a brush. He lays out a canvas horizontally, puts a layer of liquid ground coat, then before the paint is fully dried, he pours other colors and creates various shapes and forms using tools such as brushes, combs, knives, wooden sticks, or even sprays and air brushes. Also, using an industrial paint like lacquer, he adds on its unique gloss effect intensifying even more vibrant color expression. This wet on wet work process makes any modifications impossible, requiring immediacy, great precision and heightened concentration from start to finish. As if one was conducting music, Feuz’s work delivers supernatural liveliness through every inch of artist’s hand to tip of his fingers.

In the exhibition, the artist’s new works from his various series are featured. The series with fantasy-like titles such as "Psychotropical", "Atlas", "Perfect Night" and "Andromeda" have an organic relationship interplaying with one another. Looking as if they are each other’s micro or macro world, these individual series come together as a whole, expanding our perception of nature. In contrast to other series that are rhythmic and free, very recently started series "Technicolor" captures restrained parallel lines, but still presenting vibrant color schemes, allowing us to experience light spectrum of outer space.
