Artist(s): Eddie Suk Hyun KANG
Date: 20 Jan - 17 Feb 2011

Eddie Kang thematically centered on memories (reminiscences) continuously when he had expressed his works. To express the psychological status of the fiction space (Comic series), he adjusts the frame and juxtaposes the characters with the realities of life that has structural limits and develops an unfamiliar space time. Hereafter, the process of recalling his childhood illusion or series of events is to reconstruct the memories and combine (“Absorbing”, “KARMA” series) them together which is similar as the memory of systematic reconstruction. In places, the collision of reality and inner narrative exposes in his artworks. The behavior of sewing emblem that indulges the cherished objects’ absence during the artist’s childhood and studying abroad, while the subject of dolls and in between their relationship and the overwhelming robots that symbolize the external world events not only deployed as a symbolic placement but by narration which renders a distinctive structure. This description that continues the process of the stories’ context does not exist, but which suits with fiction that evolves to a positive result. When the new stories occur, the artist breaks the wall of the artwork background.

For this exhibition, the artist presents paintings, sculpture and installation. By intimating one’s heart the cute series of ‘Masked’ and ‘Un-masked’ painting series and the sculptures/ speakers series are connected with smart phones that viewers could easily interact with. The characters that appear in his works evolve after new exhibitions which varieties of characters had increased while currently 16 types of characters are newly developed. The individual characters exist by themselves and continuously arouse hybridization, transmutation that proliferates and might be evidence of the past memories that harmonize with the reality; the process of recalling. Also today, the rag dolls constantly exploring the encounters through the therapy of conversation of gazing, beyond the space time, somewhere, or an unconscious base, would fondly like to be narrated upon the canvas.
