Point of View - illusion
by Gallery IHN
Location: Gallery IHN
Artist(s): Seon Ghi BAHK
Date: 28 Aug - 27 Sep 2014

Gallery IHN is pleased to present an exhibition of Seon Ghi Bahk entitled ‘Point of View- illusion’ from 28th August to 27th September 2014.

Seon Ghi Bahk is known for his flat sculptures, large charcoal and crystal installations. The visual experience of his work changes depending on the position of the viewing. He titled his sculptures and installations ‘Point of View’.

For the artist, ‘Point of View’ series are the stories about the things that are often missed when we ‘look’ at objects. When we visualize objects, we think of a still image perspectives. However, it is not a flat image, but exists in a 4 dimensional space. An Impressionist; Paul Cezanne rejected this traditional way of looking through perspective. Instead, he applied color perspective to his work. Like Cezanne, a Cubist; Pablo Picasso used multiple perspectives to ‘look’, which was a new way of looking that stunned the art world.

‘Point of View’ series has been continuously asking questions on the matter of perspectives through ‘Point of view- seeing’ and ‘Point of View- slice’ series. For this exhibition, the artist is showcasing his new ‘Point of View- illusion’, which is an extension of ‘Point of View- seeing’ series. The works are an illusion that is created by the limit of our cognition that causes visual chaos of irregular and overlapping shapes. By combining the work with the lights, it maximizes the visual effect. Did the artist expect positive effects from this deliberate ambiguity? Bahk says “while we live; when we feel the truth and a lie, a reality and an illusion, we consider the ambiguity.” The artist seems determined, but also leaving the audiences to conclude millions of people’s opinions, differences and pluralism that is currently being discussed actively in our community.

Meanwhile, the artist asks the question of nature through charcoal, which is the final form of the tree; the symbol of life. Each hanging charcoals are in the form of the solid and magnificent architecture. However, it is not long until we find out that it is an illusion of shape and this shape is formed with a set of light pieces of charcoal. Bahk provides the viewers an opportunity to speculate the things we firmly believe and things that may exist beyond the form and texture.
