Location: Gallery IHN
Artist(s): Unsung HAN
Date: 20 Feb - 20 Mar 2013

Gallery Ihn is delighted to present the solo exhibition of new works by UnSung Han.

While the artist, Unsung Han observes the fruits he referred to it a scientific name and moreover, he is widely known for his concerns for the nature of ontological meaning. Anyone who has been observing his “fruit series” would find his new work exceedingly eccentric. Since the artist has dealt with still life for a long time, the change in the subject matter is also catching the attention.

Signboard or broadcasting set looking like objects are standing on a blue light background, which is deemed as the blue sky in fact. People in front of the temporary wall that look stale compared to the image in the front of cloned delicate pay faithfully perform its role depending on the circumstances given to each of them. If you look closely, we can’t call them actors, they look very natural, so we, as spectators have doubts again. Is the background real or fake? Are these people actually passers-by or are they actors? What is the identity of both real and fictional space? In order to understand this screen, we need to have access to the artist’s memories. When he visited the old hotel called ‘old ship hotel’ in Brighton, England, he felt uncomfortable and was displeased towards the petitioner who provided the hotel. Upon his return to Korea, he realised the historical meaning attached to the hotel.

However, the artist presents a screen that indicates the flimsy falsity of experience which the purpose is not only for warning. For example, by looking into the painting ‘harian’s gate’ unlike the previous works, the structure lies on the dark inverted background. The artist revisits the memories, while we simply discover the positive or negative of new space and the real and fake deceptive scheme. - Jin Sang RYU / Professor
