Moving Still-Life
by Gallery IHN
Location: Gallery IHN
Artist(s): Joonsung BAE
Date: 17 Oct - 7 Nov 2012

Gallery IHN presents the 2nd exhibition of the artist after the exhibition titled of ‘Naming exhibition’ in 2000. The artist, Bae Joonsung is well-known for ‘the costume of painters’ series while recently ‘Standard Charters’ had sponsored the ‘Korean Eye’ show, which has been selected by the Saatchi gallery including 34 artists that had been selected out of 2000 artists. The exhibition was held during the London Olympic Games during July 24th till September 23rd.

Moreover, he had been continuously exhibited in numerous galleries and museums and for this exhibition he utilizes a diverse range of new medium such as video, plastic covers and lenticular. In Bae, Joonsung artworks, it could be noticed that the artist wants to escape through the fixed perspective. While lifting the vinyl (plastic cover) with the colorful Western costume from his works, the background is a nude Asian woman and he utilizes the lenticular while depending on the viewer’s movement the contents of the art changes.

The artist is pleased to imagine his artworks to be installed in the world’s leading museums, while the audiences could experience the uncanny moment. At times when the steam in the bathroom mirror is wiped off, the Greek statues and women in the woods are uncovered. Sometimes the vases that would appear in the Scandinavian still life paintings that were revealed between the stacked books in the bookshelf. The scene may approach the audience as confusion but even before having a moment to fall into such a worry, the audience begins to focus on the changes in the work, which is the characteristic that Bae, Joonsung uniquely exists in his work.

Bae, Joonsung does not try to convince us on the changes of the numerous misunderstandings and the meanings of his paintings that have been created through his own thoughts. If his expression has a significant meaning, it would be that the performance played by the history of the images has not only ‘named’ or ‘dismantled’ to reveal the hidden truth, but also on the act itself which is likely to occur to both the creator and the audience.
