Hong, Sung Chul has been continuously exploring the artistic methods in interactive ways. For the artist the modified images represent contents or medium of artwork, which ‘interaction’ has constantly based on ontological question with alteration of consciousness. The images are printed on elastic strings that are layered on flat dimension which leads to a three dimensional figures of ‘string mirror’ series while the hands are tangled or holding each other’s hands or solely by itself that evokes abstract notions such as circumstances of resolving a conflict, reconciliation and solitude etc. Simply in explaining of the artwork concept by comparing the structure is difficult, at least the viewers could observe in result by encountering it in a few seconds and minutes. Each of the layers is printed with the image of hands, and depending on the viewer’s angle, the space inside is filled with density or emptiness. The viewer continuously interacts with the artworks depending on the angle they confront with.
In recent works, the artist focuses on adding beads into the works, by forming a bundle of beads with tangled strings. Inside the artwork, an appearance of someone naturally twists and tangles the beads which evidently look like a rosary. To reflect the meaning of the bundle of beads is to express the constant chaos of one’s mind and of cherished desires.
