PKM Gallery will be presenting a duo exhibition by Iran-based young painter Tala Madani (b.1981) and British media artist Nathaniel Mellors (b.1974). The artists' first exhibition in Korea will announce Madani's new paintings and Mellors' sculptures.
Receiving tremendous popularity from the global art market, Tala Madani has explored culture and sexual identity deeply seated in the contemporary society through sensual and narrative painting since the early 2000s. Her painting with simplified color and form reminding of advertising image or illustration asks about traditional recognition structure shared by members of the society as describing portraits away from men and women's traditionally expected stereotype.
Nathaniel Mellors has also covered acquired and comparative custom in the society, especially video, text and performance including theatricality and black humor are well-known. 22-minute video 'The Sophisticated Neanderthal Interview' deals with class, power and communication through fictional situation, a meeting between Neanderthal man and future human. Drawing a social talk about relation of dynamics between culture and power via various medium, Mellors will show video, sculpture and prints in the exhibition.
