Location: Galerie Bhak
Artist(s): WON Ae-Kyung

The works of Won Ae Kyung express the vitality of life. And they also portray the intricate layers of its psychology in various forms of symbolic figures. Her symbolic concepts put a great emphasis on the interchange of internal and external universe of life and its regeneration process. Such concepts are visually presented as forms of cell and organic shapes of floral nature. All these visual transformations are intended to express reverence towards life.

All the shapes in Won Ae Kyung's works look as if they are alive and breathing. The mysteriousness of natural order and illusion can be sensed throughout her various expressions. These are connected with her main theme, vitality of life and yet each is expressed with feminine sensibility and emotion.

All her recent works both in her paintings and 3-D pieces frequently express power of life and dynamic movement of various stages of life. Her work is a psychological interpretation of the images from the world of nature. The organic shape languidly floating in a screen as a code is a form of movement which symbolizes life and its regeneration process. Her shapes magnify feminine softness rather than masculine action movement. Even in a fixed a screen, Won Ae Kyung's various shapes look as if they are moving and breathing. They actually seem alive.

Such forms display the vitality of life through the synthetic process of life and regeneration. Regenerative movements through breathing are sensitive. One can view such forms drifting in empty space as 'breathing organisms' and these 'breathing organisms' are there to emphasize the movement of the vitality of life.

Won Ae Kyung depicts the images of life and regeneration through organic forms on the basis of the followings: a tension coexisting within peacefulness and composure, a repeated circle of life and regeneration process, and the sentiment of intricate layers of the natural world. Her unexpected choice of colors and delicate brushing technique have managed to create an illusion of movement of the wind and the cloud. Her work allows the viewers to feel the movements of minute air.

The shapes of life and regeneration rule the space by freeing themselves from isolated condition through such movements. The scenery and the open space are not dead but move along with these shapes.

The sky facing the earth as a space of conceiving life captures the intricate process of life and regeneration. Won Ae Kyung uses organic shape in a form of petal to create and nurture such process. One can feel the oozing power of energy from her liberal lines and unexpected choice of colors and yet her delicate touch reflects the unique harmony between Oriental sensitivity and primal vitality of life.

Her recent 3-D works demonstrate her endeavor to express the above through diverse medium and material. Here she examines the possibility of achieving this goal through glass-modeling operations. The viewers can experience such tactile sensation through actual physical contact of the glass surface. Won Ae Kyung's work is no longer just a visual phenomenon.
