Dong Wook SUH biography | artworks | events

Suh studied in France for 5 years after majoring in painting in Korea. This exhibit is his first solo exhibition in Korea after two solo exhibitions in Paris, France in 2006. He also used to be a resident artist of Cite International des Arts, Paris in 2005 and Ssamzie Space, Seoul in 2006.Suh recorded his private stories and personal experiences of people he met in videos and oil paintings. In this exhibit, Suh showed a series of oil paintings and a new video work titled “A Dark Theatre District”.

Suh also painted a young guy looking uneasy with a flashlight. The setting of this portrait is a city at night. A 2-channel video “A Dark Theatre District” screened at the basement of the exhibition hall was a formal experiment that parodied a detective novel. The plot was about searching for former famous actor Lee Seung-hyun and shot at an old-fashioned hotel “Cocombeach” which gave the film a nostalgic, faded feel.

Suh organizes his own lyrical world by finding himself in the young people that he paints and adding his personal writing about the vanity of short-lived youth.
