Kyunghwan KWON biography | artworks | events

Kwon recently had his first solo show in Korea in 2009 but has participated in numerous group exhibitions including the 2010 Busan Biennale, Young Korean Artists show at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, and group shows at the Ecole Nationale Beaux-Arts, Total Museum, Seoul Museum of Art, and Ilmin Museum of Art. Kwon received his MFA and BFA from the Korean National University of Arts. Born in 1977, Kwon currently lives and works in Seoul. Kwon’s work spans multiple media platforms include painting, drawing, video and sculpture. His recent series of black and white drawings depicts cataclysmic scenarios involving comic characters and combat scenarios. He continues his exploration of mass media imagery on the subject of countless deaths as the object of fear, taboo and the satisfaction of our voyeuristic desire to witness such events. He standardizes such imagery in repeated formats creating works of people dancing, standing in line or flowers as a commentary on the overflowing imagery bombarding us and perceived by a public that only skim the surface. Much as in his works on paper that create beautiful imagery of war and cartoons that we have grown accustomed to.
