Kulim Kim Solo Exhibition Part 2. Rose Noire
by Arario Seoul
Location: Arario Seoul
Artist(s): Ku-lim KIM
Date: 17 Jul - 24 Aug 2014

Arario Gallery is delighted to present a solo exhibition by Kulim Kim in both Seoul and Cheonan. In the exhibition, how interests of the artist, one of pioneers representing Asian Avant-garde art, have been changed in terms of a change of the era (Cheonan), and works after the artist came back to Korea in 2000 will be illuminated (Seoul). Above all, the new exhibition has a significance in looking back a major history of avant-garde spirit, disappearing in terms of social system, as well as Korean contemporary art. As the father of Korean avant-garde art, he is recognized as a leader of Asian avant-garde but a history of record and exhibitions focusing on experimental side or 'the initial' couldn't shed light on variety of his works and conceptual continuity. The new solo exhibition in two spaces will look back all of his works from 1950s to the present , and it will be a chance to explore a change and the present of Korean society and arts.

The exhibition in Seoul, 'Rose Noire,' will be featuring about 110 works created since 2000. After 1970s to 1990s, when he explored a boundary between existence and nonexistence, and reality and virtuality, works in 2000s are a mix of style, work process, medium and interest. Collages in 2000s look very chaotic and sometimes very 'sexual.' However, 'sexuality' is a basic instinct but the most repressed point in a highly organized society, and phenomenons exploded as a result of suppression can be a major measure to check the age. How this 78-years-old artist sees the current era in an experienced and quizzical view will be found in the exhibition.
