Arario Gallery will be presenting Hyung Koo Kang Solo exhibition 'Engrave.' The exhibition is the first one in Seoul after retrospective at National Museum of Singapore in 2011. It will consist of 30 drawing works including 13 new ones.
Hyung Koo Kang has been known as the portrait painter based on hyperrealism. However, under the theme 'Engrave,' this exhibition focuses on the trend of the times imprinted on a certain person's face, or a core of his art which is to follow essence. As he said "As borrowing portrait, I try to express the times.", the exhibition consists of portraits of various people from different countries and periods. Especially, 'A portrait of Yoon, Doo Seo', the painter in Chosun Dynasty, will show the world of art he pursues clearly.
In addition, this exhibition seems like focusing on a certain part of existing style but actually it shows his latest tendency, drawing hyper realistically for whole parts and removing specific parts. A change of the style emphasizes differentiation with other large scale portraits.
30 drawings included in the exhibition were selected among 100 works he created during traveling to the United States. While caricature style drawing has shown personal characteristics, new works in this time express how much his working contains 'eternity' with a momentary stroke and small touching. Those pieces will show a link with other paintings as well as act a role in exploring a way to give characteristics to each portrait by the artist.
