Intimate Distance
by Arario Seoul
Location: Arario Seoul (Cheong Dam)
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 18 Apr - 26 May 2013

Two words, 'Intimate' and 'Distance', represent phenomenon of contemporary painting. Painting, having the oldest history among mediums, was the most important one in the art history. However, after photography discovered, painting has been regarded as very individual and primitive technique unlike other mediums. However, such nonlong strange distance turned out to emphasize a necessity of painting, and became the essential medium to keep artists' independence. Also, from this point, painting has been applied in many different ways constantly.

This exhibition is planned by the independent curator Shinae Oh working in Germany. Six selected artists commonly focus on painting but have different type of view and independent and autonomous outputs.

George Condo (b.1957) is a world-class artist shedding new light on humorous 'portrait' as covering a wide range of the abstraction and the concreteness. Hans-Peter Feldmann (b. 1941) has exhibited at Gugeenheim and MOMA New York, and now he's the one of most influential artists in the world. His works deliver an object using new language of wit and satire in painting, photo, installation, and sculpture. Karin Sander (b. 1959) working in Berlin explores multilateral aspects painting has, and work adventurously.

Among artists in young generation, Chantal Joffe (b.1969) tells a relationship with people around her through painting. Bernd Ribbeck (b.1974) shows painting in depth with geometric elements, and Cristof Yvoré (b. 1967) expresses inner memories for objects through limited stills as if writing a poem.
