‘Maden’ is a new compound word from ‘Made’ and ‘en’. A photo, as a tool of reappearance, is not limited to a traditional part anymore, and used for a medium in various concepts. It has been developed as using ‘aesthetic of a moment’, a way of record in a medium, but contemporary artists study methods to create new works beyond its contingency and characteristic of record constantly. Stopped scenes and pictures in a frame by artist’s intention are planned thoroughly, which is communicated with the meaning of ‘Maden’, which is made passively.
This exhibition presents five artists whose works are a comprehensive form of art consisting of photography and video. Each work, which demands countless hours of labor before the momentary release of the shutter or press of the record button, retraces the production process. In the works, people and objects are intentionally staged by rearranging independent spaces like film and theater, prompting the viewer to reflect on both the fundamental meaning of photography beyond contingency, and the meaning of new work. As such, the transformed and processed space-time of the photographs at times demonstrates boundless potential by endlessly connecting with and expanding into other space-times.
