Arario Gallery Seoul (Cheong Dam) is pleased to present the Gao Lei Solo Exhibition, his first exhibition in Korea, showing 22 art works, including installations, paintings and photographs will be showed.
Gao Lei is included in the '80hou' generation who was born at late 1980s. Unlike their parents, this generation has grown up in the affluent environment. Thus, they have cost-driven, open, and individualistic characters. Mostly, Chinese art has a big scale and show a political motif. But the art of the '80hou' looks different significantly. The artists use various skills, such as installation, media or painting, and their art works are abstract and dreamlike, sometimes, these works are combined with Western culture or medium.
Especially, Gao Lei is very philosophical, and uses various elements and genre in one piece of art. His 'Scene' and 'Building' series has been worked since 2005, they show beings and artifacts at the same time. There is a hole in a box, and audience can see the photos inside through it. Photos show odd situations in a room, such as an astronaut lying down, or two giraffes walking in a room. This room is in an existed building in Beijing where the artist has taken. But by the artist's directing, it is created as the virtual world, people can make an illusion.
In this exhibition, his new artworks in 2012 are more elaborated than the previous. With the purpose of life and death, and the eternal cycle of birth, he researched the relationship between personal and social environments in depth. This exhibition will be an opportunity to introduce new trends and fresh forms of the Chinese contemporary art.
