Cynical Resistance is a group exhibition that brings together eight artists; Hao Liang, Huang JingYuan, Lu ZhengYuan, Ma Qiusha, Pan Jian, Tu HongTao, Ye LingHan and Zang KunKun- who are the new generation of artists that will lead Chinese art. Curator Yun Cheagab, known to understand and have much experience in Chinese art, has organized this exhibition that contains about 60 pieces of art works in different media; including paintings, sculptures and videos.
Born in the 1970’s and the 80’s, the artists spent their childhoods in political, economical, and social upheaval. Unlike the ‘China Avant-Garde’ generation, the young artists freed themselves from the basic and abstract system of Grand Discourse. For this reason, one may judge these young artists as being speculative and weak, but Yun Cheagab agrees to culture critic Wang Shaomeng, who said, “Thinking that these young artists are less political than their seniors is bias.” He also says that even though the young artists may seem as weak and immature, they also deeply care about society and human, and comment on the screaming world with their art works with different methods and approaches.
For these reasons, the eight young artists were gathered in this exhibition to show how the new generation of Chinese art overcomes the outcome and errors of the ‘China Avant-Grade’ generation who drew grand attention from the Art World, and build their own style and concept. Cynical Resistance will provide a chance to think about what sustains and supports today’s China.
