Joohyeong RHEE biography | artworks | events

RHEE Joohyeong was born in Nonsan, Chungnam in 1974. He graduated from the College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University (SNU) and its graduate school, majoring in painting. Rhee often uses hair as his material and paints the back of his head or the transformation. Hair is a metaphor that symbolizes individuals’ fear in the society. Rhee metaphorically expresses a situation that fear continues to grow from a sprit that already lost vigor just like hair continues to grow from a body that already stopped growing. The artist expresses the situation either aggressively – e.g. “Mystery” - or with hope to overcome – e.g. “Spore - germinate on its own though asexual reproduction.” Recently Rhee had a solo exhibition “Undefined Scene” at the Sung-ok Art Museum in 2010.
