KIM Kichul was born in Seoul, in 1969. He graduated from the College of Fine Arts, Hong-ik University and its graduate school, majoring in sculpture. He then studied audio production at the Art Institute of Seattle, and majored in fine art and integrated media at the California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts). Since his first solo exhibition, “Sip-il-myun gwaneum (the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy with eleven faces)” in 1993, he has consistently concentrated on the theme of “how can one see sound?” To the artist, seeing sound means a sort of composition. Therefore, Kim has sought varying approaches to visualize sound. For instance, he has tried acoustics and electronics, audience involvement such as making them to write down the sound on paper, and recreated sound-waves in the 3-dimension. Recently, he has been focusing on emotional approaches to sound and sound-psychology, which he had tried in his early days as a sculptor. He, so far, has held 8 solo exhibitions and participated in some 60 group exhibitions at home and abroad.
