Lost in Rome
by Gallery Baton
Location: Gallery Baton
Artist(s): Paolo VENTURA
Date: 13 Feb - 16 Mar 2013

Diorama is his unique form of production since his early series of work 'Winter Stories' and the most effective material to adopt Paolo's artistic directing point to photograph. As creating a certain subject, a space and a story one by one with his imagination, Paolo has taken daily life in Italy or old memories.
Paolo's Diorama technique helps to overcome weakness photography has in terms of a process of making images. A process of making all elements in a photo as miniature is an essential method. Through this elaborate technique, dummies in a frame challenge original photo by using incompleteness of sight.

'Lo Zuavo Scomparso' is done by request from Rome. However, as usual, it's hard to find Rome's characteristics in his works. In terms of his intention, the reality mixed with imagination, his work is expressed as a irrecognizable space, and even though he shows up as the observer in photo, he doesn't explain historical background or situation. In this series, only people's clothes tell that the background is Italy.

The title of new series 'Lo Zuavo Scomparso' means 'lost soldier in Roma'. Zuavo is French light infantry unit stationed in Africa but now all soldiers are called as this. Zuavo's unique custom with fanciness became a trend to the public later. Paolo tried to create his own Rome. As presenting Zuavo on his works, Romae he created transformed into where time stands still and an unfamiliar space.
