The Sleep of Reason
by SongEun ArtSpace
Location: SongEun ArtSpace
Artist(s): Jake & Dinos CHAPMAN
Date: 23 Aug - 7 Dec 2013

Jake and Dinos Chapman were members of YBA, Young British Artists. Since graduating from Royal College of Art in 1990, brothers have collaborated and explored various social taboos, from a historical icon in art, such as Goya's famous 'Disasters of War', to popular one like Ronald McDonald.
For this exhibition, Chapaman brothers' works since 2002 and for the first time, five new paintings will be on display.
Chpaman brothers have constantly covered the issues of human existence and a moral act with various materials, process and subjects. Sometimes excessively unpleasant or superficial expression on their work is criticized but they keep pursuing complicated themes. Also, brothers have dealt with the critical mind, such as a meaning artist has in a society, a role of art, and even a part of cooperation for production of work. Humor is also the important factor in their work, and it is in line with British satirists in 1700s and the trend of philosophy in 20th century by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche and Georges Bataille.
Francis Goya, representative Spanish artist in 19th century, affected on them so that his influence is showed on their work directly or medium and subject. The title of exhibition is derived from Goya's representative 'The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (1797-1799)' work, which became a way to introduce the history when a concept of 'rationality' was created and ideas of 'childhood' and 'adulthood' were finally constructed. As handling the main subjects same as Goya and using his works, Chapman brothers express the same theme more ambiguous but complex and universal. A revaluation of Goya and drawing moral interest in the contemporary society are the key point of their art work.
"Enlightenment made us have blind faith in rationality but Goya didn't and we also don't take a biased view on that." Jake Chapman said.
