Location: SongEun ArtSpace
Artist(s): Sekyung LEE
Date: 21 Jun - 10 Aug 2013

SongEun ArtSpace has supported emerging Korean artists and held the exhibitions of them annually. In this year, Sekyung Lee is selected as a third artist and she will show previous works made of hair to express historical patterns of East and West, as well as new works about issues on memory and reminiscence.

Sekyung Lee has studied at Sungshin Women's University in Korea and Kunstakademie Münster and after the first exhibition “Haare auf dem Teppich” in Germany, the arist has built up the own art world and skills, as she shows own narrative using an unique material, hair.

The new exhibition is her third one in Korea and the first time at a non-profit space. Hair represents a beauty when growing as a part of body, but falls as waste when it is cut. She has focused on a contradictory side and explored it. Sekyung Lee was inspired by historical resources and created white porcelain or tiles decorated by hair. The pattern she created can be found in Meissen porcelain in Germany, geometric figure of Constructivism, traditional tile pattern from the Netherlands or Portugal, and Chinese and Korean crafts. Thus, ordinary ceramics or dishes adorned with hair look like valuable heritages ironically.

The exhibition will be where sheds light on various mediums and research, and explores her own world about 'reminiscence' through new works.
